Exchange your old and unreliable gas-guzzling car for a fully electric refurbished Nissan Leaf that can lower your car expenses by $1,500 a year.

GoodWheels is a non-profit created to help working families and individuals who are struggling to afford the rising cost of gasoline and the frequent maintenance that comes with an old car. 

Program Benefits & Costs

    • A refurbished Nissan Leaf EV (2013-2017) with a range of about 140-150 miles when fully charged

    • AAA membership

    • An EV coach to teach you about your electric car

    • Limited warranties on the battery and basic components (brakes etc.)

    • $1,500 estimated savings each year

    Freedom from high gas prices and frequent car maintenance!

  • Your Cost (estimate)

    • $950 vehicle cost (minus the value of the car you exchange)

    • AAA membership ($82 / year)

    • Maryland Taxes (6.5% = $61.75)

    • Maryland Title ($200)

    • Maryland Registration ($120.50)

    • Maryland EV Fee ($125/year or $250 for 2 years)

    Total = $0 to $1,664.25 

Application Process & Requirements

There is a detailed application process through our partners at Vehicles for Change. Before beginning that application process we pre-screen to confirm applicants meet the following criteria.

Basic Eligibility
Requirements

  • Qualify as low-income (annual income less than $75,000) 

  • Age 25 or older

  • Valid Maryland Driver’s license

  • No DUI/DWI in past 3 years

  • No insurance flags with MVA

  • Work at least 30 hours/week and require transportation for employment purposes

Vehicle Exchange
& Charging

  • Own a gasoline vehicle to exchange (or have owned a car within the last 3 months)

  • Have access to an EV Charger or off-street parking at your home (a parking pad, driveway or garage) where you can charge through a standard home outlet

Acceptance Commitments

  • Commit to make best effort to keep car for 5 years

  • Sign a photo release and participate in media and publicity events

  • Commit to provide data / feedback 2-3 times / year (with compensation for your time)
