How We Do It
GoodWheels’ unique approach brings together partners in workforce training and EV battery recycling to replace degraded batteries in first-generation Nissan Leafs.
Step 1: Find an old EV
We source high mileage / low-range 2013-2017 Nissan Leafs through donations or will purchase them on the used-car market if they meet our requirements. These EVs are reliable, need little maintenance and can cut fuel expenses by 60%. So what’s the catch?
After years on the road, these EVs require charging about every 50 miles. That won’t cut it as the only car for low-income family juggling a commute, childcare, and more. But a simple battery replacement can triple to 150 miles, making it a viable option for an average low-income family driving about 30 miles a day.
Step 2: Upgrade the Battery
We partner with Vehicles for Change to install re-manufactured 42 kWh batteries in the Nissan Leafs. They also make any other repairs to ensure the vehicle is ready for a family.
Since 1999 Vehicles for Change has repaired and awarded cars to low-income families, while training formerly incarcerated individuals as ASE certified mechanics.
This unique model introduces auto mechanic trainees to EV electrical systems, helping them take their first step towards high-growth and higher-wage career paths,.
Step 3: Select a Family
Working through Vehicles for Change and other community partners, we identify a low-income family to trade in their old, budget-busting, gas-guzzling clunker for a refurbished and upgraded Nissan Leaf.
In addition to screening for income and other eligibility requirements, we consider the family’s annual mileage needs and access to charging (see below).
Step 4: Guarantee the Loan
We leverage the proven model of our partners at Vehicles for Change which empowers families to contribute a small amount to the cost of their vehicle. Family contribute about $1,000 in the form of a short-term (12-month) loan. This fosters pride and dignity, while helping the family build a positive credit history.
And because GoodWheels guarantees the loan, our lending partner is able to keep the interest rate low enough that annual savings in fuel and maintenance should offset the monthly loan payments. After 12-months, the recipient has a free car that saves them $1,500 a year and has strengthened their credit.
Step 5: Train & Support
We assign a volunteer “EV Coach” to every family that receives a refurbished EV. These coaches train recipients on charging and provide troubleshooting to ensure the family’s EV transition is a success. Importantly, GoodWheels will screen families to ensure they can charge their EV through a 110V outlet or, if viable, facilitate installation of a Level 2 charger through the electric utility (at no cost to the family).
